The Knotts Island Ruritan Club has voted 20 to 6 to suspended the annual Peach Festival for 2009. A Community day will be scheduled around the opening of the new skateboard park. Also in the planning stages will be a Seafood Festival in early October of this year.

Last years attendance was way down. They felt it to be a larger risk this year with our present economy. We also need to come up with a way to improve the festival, to bring in a crowd. We will take a hard look at how the skateboard park goes and maybe build an event around it,to include the Peach Festival. We are really open to any and all suggestions from the residents, it is Knotts Islands festival and community park.

My suggestion is a mini-triathalon using bikes, running, and kayaks. A loop using the refuge, and using local business' as stopping and starting points. This will eventually bring in people who have money to spend, as well as promote a family atmosphere. The biggest thing is that it will highlight our natural attributes w/ a minimal impact to the community.
The race would grow. I expect it would be slow at first but that is perfect. Enough time to get a handle on things and refine the process.
We have a strong race crowd to the north and south.
Promoting health and nature. Mix in some local culture w/ the after race event. End the race itself at a local business, follow up w/ awards at the park, then direct everyone back to the local businesses.

Billy's triathlon could be a major event on Saturday. On Sunday, a kick-ass skate board tournament. Get a washed up country or rock band to perform that weekend. Talent agencies have lots of old has-beens who's name would be a draw despite their age. Pirates of the Mississippi comes to mind. How to pay for it? I remember a couple of years back, Verizon was continually asking me about being a sponsor. I kept forwarding the e-mails and never heard how it went. They, or businesses like them, could help with event and would probably want no more than the usual banners and notations around the park. Just a thought.

He's right. Sponsorship can be fairly effortless to set up. Second, the triathlon will bring in the desired crowd and can build from there. The skate crowd will never mix w/ the general public. It's against the grain.
I am a bit confused on the whole thing. I mentioned approaching sponsors to be able to contribute to the skate park and received no response. I mentioned to one person we should allow a company to place a graphic on the concrete and did not get a positive response. This park will be used strongly by kids in southern VB. People will travel here just to ride it even if it is just once. That's what skaters do.
The brands of clothing and parts are purchased anyway. We should use that to our advantage if possible. I know people who skate/snowboard for a living. They are very open w/ advice.
One last note on the tri/adventure race: this place is perfect for it. A truly low impact event that brings adults who can spend money. It will take a few years to get it rolling perfectly but this can work.
Knotthead: Can I post a scan of a rough sketch I have?

The scan has to be uploaded to a place like Pic-casa and then you use your post to link to the pic. It shows up from the server you posted it to.

This is how most innovative subjects are handled in the organizations. I'm not gonna be popular for saying so but each club I've been in has been cool to any new ideas from the newcomers. It's part of the answer to why memberships are down. I'm not the only one that feels this way.
Go ahead. Hit me with your poison, folks. Just callin' it like I see it.

Just for the record, I didn't bring it up to any club. Just private conversations.

Thanks for letting us know it has been canceled as I was planning on heading down from Hampton Roads with the family for our 1st Peach Festival and Wild Life Festival. We would have been very disappointed to only find a skate park opening as we have a toddler who is much to young for that (I'm not against skate parks tho). Thanks again and I vote to bring it back for next year and if they do we'll be there.
