Dear Knott's Island Residents, I am going to Elizabeth City for work next week, and I am thinking of spending an extra day so I can ride my bicycle. I am considering taking the ferry from Currituck to your island. Then I was gong to ride north to Creeds and then circle back to Currituck. I'd be doing this on a week day afternoon. I was hoping you could tell me whether you thought these roads were safe for bike riding. These two links show the entire route: www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/knotts-islandwww.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Currituck-Creeds Are there any shoulders whatsoever? Also, I assume it is quite flat, but I thought I'd double check. Thank you for any input. AMC

The roads don't have much of a shoulder until you get on VA168/NC158. Others ride these roads though.

Ahh...look up. He triggered a cycling ad. Cool.
Anyhow, whether it is safe or not is debatable. I ride down here but is pretty clear that from here in to Va cyclist are not the most popular bunch. You should be find though if you remain aware and keep your line.
Head out of here and turn L on Pungo Ferry. At the stop sign on Blackwater turn L. Go up to Hungarian and turn R. You follow that 'til it ends and turn L. Then turn R awhen that one ends(cannot remember names). You will proceed until you will see a left hand turn which I believe is Galbush. You can pick up Battlefield over there and head south. Anyone remember the street names? A better route to Battlefield?

Dear Director of Positivity,
I am trying to follow your directions. When you say, "head out of here," what do you mean? Where is "here," the ferry dock? Do you feel ok about all of the roads that are on my proposed route, or are you referring only to the one on your island?
Is the route flat? Will I be able to find something to eat along the way on a weekday afternoon? How far is the deli from the ferry dock?
By the way, I find this forum very amusing. You folks have a quirky sense of humor. I am thinking "Northern Exposure" or "Men in Trees."

I didn't look at your routes. Don't need to. There is only one road off of the island. After that you are in VA and follow my directions once you have left the island. The turn of Pungo Ferry is your first turn. The primary road here on KI just creates sort of a loop at one point which is your only real possible turn. Any wrong turn will be figured out quickly. If you cannot find your way off of a one road island you may have bigger problems to worry about.
As for the grade of the route, no it is not flat. We have mountains here on the east coast that rise as high as 14,000 feet. Some people need supplemental oxygen just to walk to school. You should train beforehand for these hills. Vitamin supplements such as Viagra and Levitra will help a great deal. The 'deli' is just short of 4 miles from the ferry dock. Offer some of your 'vitamins' to the guys hanging out. This greases the wheels here locally.
I have never seen those shows. I have to run. I have a date with my cousin.

I am back. I looked at your mapp and they make no sense. My directions are the de facto way to get south. Then you will turn to go to E City or the ferry. You may want to wait until your date is closer and I can provide directions in more detail.
You safety questions are easy. Most of the ride will be winding 2 lane country roads that often will have no shoulder. People bike on them frequently although they are not the best roads for this. I would do it. What would worry me is when you cross back into Carolina when you are on the return trip. 168 is basically a poorly designed interstate. I ride that road for about a mile once I get off of the ferry to go to my mothers house and it makes me nervous. However, a large part of it can be avoided by going down Tulls Bay Road. You should do a mapquest search from Knotts Island, NC to Moyock, NC. That seemed to be an accurate way to get to the mainland from here. You will then plot from Moyock to where you are headed. Be sure to do it in two parts as I have described or it will tell you to get on the ferry.

Due to a small typo on the map directions, she's still in Moyock waiting for the ferry.

Hey- I'm not dead! But you are right- some of those dump truck drivers seemed like they wanted to do away with me.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the bike ride. It was quite a cold day, but it was sunny. After my semi-private ferry ride, I was greeted by a lovely Retriever on Knott's Is. It was very windy around the marshes. The part around Blackwater was very pretty. Other than the dump trucks, the worst part was going down Tulley's Ferry Rd. It was dark by then, and the cars were going at unbelievable speeds. I believe the ride was 43 miles.

Allison, I am so sorry. I should have warned you that there are not many unattached females down here. I don't think the trucks were aiming at you, but checking you out. The town has been buzzing for weeks about the "new" girl on a bike.
