Hi everyone. I hope I'm allowed to join in the group even though I'm not from the island. My sister is seriously thinking of buying a house there and just came back from a house hunting trip. I have lot's of questions about the area and plan on spending lot's of time in Norfolk visiting my Daughter. It would be great if my sister gets a place on KI, so close to my daughter. We live in Pennsylvania at present. So, here's some questions:
1. Mosquitoes. Are there tons of them? Can you sit outside at night or will you be carried away by a swarm?
2. Snakes. I know they are there, but do you see them? Or only right before they sink their fangs into you?
3. What do you do in the winter?
4. What do you do in the summer?
5. What's this I hear about Jet noise? What? I can't hear you?!!!
6. Do you LOVE living there?
7. I don't know....just tell me all about what's it's like to live there....kinda like the pluses and minuses.
I know it's alot for a first post, but that's just me. Look forward to getting to know you. Lisa

Welcome to the forum. I'd love to answer some of your questions and I'm sure the lurkers around here are going to have fun with this one. I'm at work and just put in a 16 hour day so I'll have to start in later but I wanted you to know you've been noticed.

The mosquitos aren't bad in the daytime. The dragonflies keep them at bay. At night you need to use Deep Woods Off (aka KI Cologne). We do have some annoying flies that bite though. We call them (sit down for this) biting flies. There are a few snakes around here but snakebite fatalities are about the same as the national average. In winter we do what everbody else does in winter...drink beer and watch football. Sometimes we duck hunt. In summer we drink beer and watch baseball. Sometimes we fish. The jet noise here is about the same as it is around any other master jet base. The up side to that is they drown out the noise from all the diesel pickups with no mufflers. Some people love living here. I do. Some people don't. It's like any other rural community that's infested with snakes, mosquitos and loud trucks (just kidding). There's many plusses to living here...hunting, good fishing, the new bridge, the Annual Peach Festival, the free ferry, dragonflies, Pearl's, the hottie across the street and, unlike some rural communities, we don't have fire ants I think. If you're a tomato lover, you'll love it here. Everybody grows tomatoes. Then everybody gives them away to each other. It's like, no matter what you do, you always have too many tomatoes. Disadvantages include snakes, mosquitos, biting flies, the ongoing war between the kayakers and canoers, jet noise and loud trucks (just kidding). Also you can't buy beer on Sunday morning. Hopefully our new County Commissioner will fix that. That's all I have for now. Hope you found this information helpful. Please don't hesitate to ask any more questions that come to mind.

What he said.
Plus. I love it here too.
Except when the 30 pound snapping turtle got out of the trash can and wandered at large in the back of my 4-Runner as I was taking the ungrateful son of (*&(*&(*#^^%$$# to the refuge.
You know there's more to that story but I have to get back to work.
Again, welcome to the forum. It's like visiting us without the hassle of actually hanging around us.

:)Hey, thanks for the great information. Here in Pennsylvania we have lot's of flies, but I don't think we have the rare "biting fly" here. We do have lot's of beer drinkers though. Do you actually see the snakes or do you just KNOW they are slithering around SOMEWHERE waiting to impale you with their blood dripping fangs? Do you have a tightknit community or does everyone just do their own thing? It looks so beautiful there, and it sounds like you really love living there. 30lb snapping turtle? I think I'll skip telling my sister about that until I hear the whole story.

The snapping turtles grow real big around here because they have lots of snakes to eat. Yes, this is a pretty tight-knit community. If you want to know what somebody's up to, simply go to Pearl's (our local watering hole) and ask somebody. You'll hear at least a dozen different stories, each one better than the last... Example: "I saw the Sheriff's car at Joe's house the other day. What's up with that?" First you'll hear something like, "Joe is good friends with the sheriff. He visits Joe all the time."...will morph into..."Well I heard Joe is wanted in Arkansas for a bank he robbed in the '70s"....will morph into..."I heard Joe is being investigated for war crimes in Chechnya"...and finally..."Yeah, well I heard Joe has a giant hole dug in his living room where he keeps his sex slaves". Joe's reputation quickly spirals downward. ;D

I heard the snapping turtles got as big as they are because because Joe is feeding his sex slaves to them!

So THAT'S why it's so hard to find a sex slave in this town!

They're actually trying to get their money out of me while we're in the shipyard.

Here's the take on the issue from a southender:
1. Mosquitoes. Are there tons of them? Can you sit outside at night or will you be carried away by a swarm?
We basically live between refuges and there is no bug control. KI Cologne and plenty of Benadryl are the key. If you are concerned w/ bugs...you might not like it here.
2. Snakes. I know they are there, but do you see them? Or only right before they sink their fangs into you?
Sure you see them. Sometimes you have to tell your neighbor to secure his property borders. I am sure mine are coming from an adjoining property owner who worships them.
3. What do you do in the winter?
People duck hunt and they, um...go to the store or Pearls(if they are open). Then you go duck hunting again...or drink beer.
4. What do you do in the summer?
Stay on the water myself. I like to kayak and ride my bike. On the bike you have to be careful of the trucks and on the kayak you have to keep an eye out for the canoeist. The beach is beautiful and close. Of course you will have to put some time into the garden to ensure your neighbors have veggies.
5. What's this I hear about Jet noise? What? I can't hear you?!!!
That's mostly in Virginia Beach. It is disruptive here but many parts of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake are unbelievably loud. They do not have as many bugs though.
6. Do you LOVE living there?
Most days. The drive can be a killer but it keeps the people away.
7. I don't know....just tell me all about what's it's like to live there....kinda like the pluses and minuses.
It is quiet and you can see the stars. It is in the middle of nowhere if you actually need to be anywhere. My kids are safe and their school seems to be pretty good. It is a throwback lifestyle that may not be available in many places on the planet. however, you asked if it was a tight knit community. That may be the biggest understatement of all time. Outsiders can have a hard time at first. My suggestion is to begin telling people you are from Camden.
I know it's alot for a first post, but that's just me. Look forward to getting to know you. Lisa
