Hi .... I will be traveling to the Outer Banks (Nags Head) from Pennsylvania with my family this August and I was trying to find a more laid back, scenic way to go vs. driving through the Norfolk/Virginia Beach interstates after getting off the Cheasapeke Bay Bridge Tunnel that the standard directions send you on. I realize I may not be saving any real mileage or time by taking the Knotts Island Ferry over to Currituck but I want to show my boys the beauty of the smaller towns along the way. Since we leave at around 2 am from Pennsylvania I think we should be able to make it to Knotts Island around 8-9 am on Saturday. My mother was born in Coinjock and I remember visiting the smaller towns back in the 60's when I was a kid and I want to share that with my sons. Does the Ferry get busy at that time of year ? Is this a "doable" way to get to Nags Head ? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey there, I'm not currently a Knotts Is. resident (but might as well be one ;p), and if you want to show your kids the great beauty of this area...
I would say get off the freeway which is 264 or 64 (same thing practically) and head over to Princess Anne Road from General Booth Boulevard. Princess Anne Road will actually take you South to Knotts Is. That way you can see the rural and beach part of southeastern Virginia and get into Knotts that way. The ferry on Knotts will take you over to Currituck and that way you can hop off that and head out to OBX or wherever it was in NC you're going to; I think you said Nags Head.
I've never been on the ferry at that time of year, but I would say no it's not busy since everytime I'm on it it's practically empty. And yes that is a doable way to get to Nags Head, off the ferry, just keep headin South. If you want to skip mid-day tourist traffic in OBX though, I would say stay the night in Knotts and leave early on the ferry to Currituck then head out to the Outer Banks from there.... since it's 35mph practically the whole way down there. Slower 'n hell. There are plenty of small Bed and Breakfasts in Knotts that have beautiful views of the sound and what not. Just make sure you're comin in here at a good time cause we've been gettin some harsh weather around these parts lately. Ferry's not the best place to be during a lightening storm ;p. -tc

Another way to beat the traffic on 158 is to go to get off that road and head to Eliazbeth City. Then you go south and come in to Dare County from the back way over the Manteo Bridge. Pretty drive and plenty of little stops along the way for snacks and a stretch. Most of all, you'll be driving, not idling in traffic. More miles but less hassle and wear on your car.

Yeah. On Saturday traffic was backed up down Ferry Dock road and even w/ the big ferry in service people were denied entry. The ferry is gambling during the summer. We live next to it and still drop off our car early.

In an unrelated subject, I noticed I have '0' Karma....in fact, everybody here has '0' Karma. What's up with that? How does one get their Karma up to '1', or even '2'?...or is '0' Karma a good thing?...like golf....the lower the number the better.....like, if Ben Ladin was a member of this board, he'd have...like....'5' Karma. I think I get it now. I answered my own question. Thanks anyway.

I exalted you and you have a Karma rating of 1 now. It would appear that the bigger the number the better. It would also appear that others can smite you and take away your karma. I don't know if any of this has a use or not, but it should be interesting.

Look in the life boat. There is supposed to be a really pretty girl in there looking for food.
